How Legacy of Dead works

Legacy of Dead uses five reels, three rows and 10 fixed payline patterns. You can activate the first 1-10 lines, always in numerical order.

So fixed paylines describes the routes, not whether all 10 have to be switched on. The paths stay the same; only the number in play changes.

Ordinary payline wins run from left to right, beginning with the left-most reel. The Tomb Scatter has a second job too: it acts as a Wild and can substitute for the game’s other symbols.

In the base game, wins still follow those active line patterns. Free Spins add a specific exception for the Special Expanding Symbol.

How Legacy of Dead Free Spins work

Legacy of Dead Tomb Scatter and Wild symbolThree or more Scatter symbols trigger 8 Free Spins. The Scatter also acts as a Wild in the game.

The feature keeps the same bet and number of selected paylines as the round that triggered it, unless the rules state otherwise. The same line setup carries into the Free Spins.

Before the first Free Spin, the game randomly selects one regular symbol, excluding the Scatter, to become the Special Expanding Symbol.

At first, only that chosen symbol gets the special expanding treatment. Retriggers can add more selected symbols, which is the twist that changes how the feature develops.

How the Special Expanding Symbol works

During Free Spins, when enough copies of the selected Special Expanding Symbol land, they can expand to fill every position on the reels where they appear. One matching symbol on a reel can therefore become a full three-position stack.

Q is the selected Special Expanding Symbol here and visibly fills all three positions on reels 2, 3 and 4 in this demo capture.

These wins also get an exception to the normal line rule. Special Expanding Symbols do not have to sit next to one another to contribute to an extra win. The current in-game rules say those Free Spins combinations can contain gaps and still pay from left to right, beginning on any reel where a winning combination is possible.

This is specific to Legacy of Dead’s Free Spins, not a general rule for every expanding-symbol game. It also differs from Book of Dead. The two games look closely related, but their documented expanding-symbol rules are not identical.

Important distinction: Slotathon’s Book of Dead evidence contains a separate condition about expansion creating additional active-payline prizes. The Legacy of Dead evidence reviewed for this page does not state that same condition, so we do not import it here.

What happens when Legacy of Dead Free Spins retrigger?

Three or more Scatters during Free Spins retrigger the feature and award 8 additional Free Spins.

The retrigger does more than top up the spin counter. Each one also selects another Special Expanding Symbol at random.

So the list of expanding symbols can grow as the bonus continues. You start with one; after a retrigger there can be more than one, and further retriggers can add more.

The additional selection joins the expanding-symbol setup already in play. Later spins in the same feature can therefore have more than one Special Expanding Symbol active.

Why this matters: a retrigger in Legacy of Dead changes more than the number of spins remaining. It can widen the set of symbols participating in the feature, so the state of the bonus can become different from the state in which it began.

Legacy of Dead vs Book of Dead

The family resemblance is obvious, but the rules are not interchangeable. Both games use a 5×3 layout, selectable fixed paylines, a Scatter that also acts as Wild, and a Free Spins feature built around a randomly selected Special Expanding Symbol.

Legacy of Dead and Book of Dead mechanic comparison
Rule Legacy of Dead Book of Dead
Initial Free Spins 8 10
Retrigger award 8 additional spins 10 additional spins
Expanding-symbol state after retrigger Adds another randomly selected Special Expanding Symbol Reviewed rules keep the original selected symbol for the feature sequence

The retrigger is the clearest difference. Book of Dead extends the feature. Legacy of Dead extends it and adds another expanding-symbol target. So although both are easy to describe loosely as “book-style” slots, the bonus does not evolve in the same way.

Legacy of Dead RTP and versions

Play’n GO documents five RTP configurations for Legacy of Dead: 96.58%, 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%.

There is no single Legacy of Dead RTP that applies to every client. The 96.58% figure is the highest setting in the Play’n GO rules Slotathon reviewed, not a universal value.

The same Play’n GO settings document marks the 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55% configurations as not applicable to operators licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority. That is an MGA-specific restriction in the source. It should not be read as a Great Britain rule.

Our UK-facing checks found three of the five documented settings in live game clients, with 94.51% appearing most often in this particular sample.

What RTP did Slotathon find at UK casinos?

Slotathon checked Legacy of Dead across 11 selected UK-facing casino clients on 24-25 September 2026. Every reading below was verified against the original in-game rules screenshot.

Legacy of Dead RTP observed by Slotathon, 24-25 September 2026
Casino RTP observed Checked
bet365 94.51% 24 Sep 2026
Betfred 94.51% 24 Sep 2026
Betway 94.51% 25 Sep 2026
LeoVegas 91.51% 24 Sep 2026
MrQ 94.51% 24 Sep 2026
Paddy Power 94.51% 25 Sep 2026
PlayOJO 91.51% 24 Sep 2026
Sky Vegas 94.51% 24 Sep 2026
Slots Temple 96.58% 25 Sep 2026
Virgin Games 91.51% 25 Sep 2026
William Hill 91.51% 24 Sep 2026

The distribution was 94.51% at six clients, 91.51% at four and 96.58% at one. We did not encounter the documented 87.56% or 84.55% configurations in this 11-client sample.

About this snapshot: these are dated observations from the game clients Slotathon checked, not a market-share estimate or a recommendation of any casino. The absence of 87.56% and 84.55% from this sample does not establish that those versions are unavailable in Great Britain.

How can you check the RTP of your version?

Open the in-game rules or help screen and look for the RTP statement. In the Legacy of Dead clients Slotathon checked, the rules displayed wording in the form “The average RTP is X%. The RTP is achieved through participation.”

Check the loaded game rather than assuming the highest provider setting applies everywhere. Legacy of Dead has several documented RTP versions, so the percentage shown in the game’s own rules is the relevant figure for that client.

Legacy of Dead volatility and maximum win

Play’n GO classifies Legacy of Dead as Very High 10/10 volatility.

The first-party math and paytable material supports a maximum win of 5,000× total bet.

Those numbers describe different parts of the model. RTP is a long-run theoretical return setting, volatility describes the game’s variance profile, and maximum win is a payout ceiling. None of them tells you how often Free Spins will trigger or how likely a particular session is to reach the maximum.

What about the optional Gamble round?

Play’n GO’s rules also document an optional post-win card Gamble. After a main-game prize, the player can choose to risk it by predicting the colour or suit of a hidden card. A correct colour prediction doubles the gambled prize, while a correct suit prediction quadruples it.

The rules allow up to five successive Gamble rounds and set a 2,500-coin limit. They also state that the feature may be disabled in some jurisdictions or by operator choice.

The 11 UK-facing rules screens were not identical here. The Gamble paragraph appeared at Betfred, MrQ, PlayOJO, Sky Vegas, Betway and Paddy Power. It was absent from the bet365, LeoVegas, William Hill, Slots Temple and Virgin Games captures.

The screenshots prove that the visible rules text differed between clients, but not whether the Gamble feature was actually available in every one of them.

Which Legacy of Dead version does this page cover?

This page covers Play’n GO’s original Legacy of Dead. Play’n GO’s current game page lists its release date as 2 January 2020, which is the date used here.

The headline mechanics come from Play’n GO’s GRS1611 rules/settings and current game page. Dated casino-client screenshots are kept separate where RTP or visible rules text differs between deployments.

About these sources: first-party Play’n GO material controls the core rules and documented math configurations. Third-party reviews were used for reconciliation and conflict checking only, including a secondary 10-spin claim that does not override the primary Play’n GO rules and live-client evidence showing 8 spins.
Our methodology

How we researched Legacy of Dead

Slotathon starts with first-party evidence such as in-game rules, developer documentation and game settings. We then compare live client observations where the same title can be deployed with different configurations.

When sources disagree, we keep the conflict in the research record and let the strongest evidence control the published claim. For Legacy of Dead, that means Play’n GO’s 8-spin rules take precedence over a conflicting secondary review that describes 10 spins.
