What Slotathon is

Slot games have become increasingly complicated. A modern game might combine cascading reels, expanding symbols, multipliers, collection mechanics, bonus features and several different ways of forming a win.

The names do not always make things easier. Different developers can use different terms for similar behaviour, while features with similar names can work quite differently from one game to another.

Slotathon exists to make those mechanics easier to understand.

Rather than starting with marketing labels, we look at what happens inside the game: what triggers a feature, what changes once it begins, how progress is tracked, when something resets and where one mechanic ends and another begins.

Research-led explanations

Slotathon is built around evidence rather than assumptions about how a feature probably works.

Where possible, we use sources such as in-game rules, help screens, paytables, developer documentation, game sheets and certification material.

We also keep track of situations where different sources or versions of a game do not agree.

That matters because slot mechanics are rarely as universal as a short definition makes them sound. A mechanic may have a common pattern while still behaving differently between developers, games, builds or jurisdictions.

Written with Great Britain in mind

Slotathon is written primarily for readers in Great Britain.

That matters when a feature, betting mode or game configuration differs between markets. If reliable evidence shows that a UK version behaves differently from an international version, we aim to make that distinction clear rather than presenting them as the same game.

International examples can still be useful for explaining how a mechanic works, but they should not be taken as proof that the same feature or configuration is available in Great Britain.

The site is an informational resource about game mechanics and behaviour.

What a mechanic does not tell you

Knowing that a game contains a particular mechanic does not, by itself, tell you its RTP, volatility, hit frequency, feature frequency, maximum win or likelihood of winning.

Those are separate characteristics and should not be inferred simply from the presence of a feature.

We only make those kinds of factual claims where the underlying evidence specifically supports them.

Corrections and new evidence

Slotathon’s research is not treated as finished simply because a page has been published.

Game documentation changes, new versions appear and stronger evidence sometimes resolves something that was previously unclear.

If new evidence changes the picture, the published explanation should change too.
