How Slot Games Actually Work

Cascading Reels
A winning group disappears, new symbols fall into place, and the game checks again, so one spin can pay more than once.
Cluster Pays
Instead of following paylines, matching symbols need to form a connected group. How they connect is part of the game’s rules.
Free Spins
Free Spins can work quite differently from one game to another. The number awarded, whether they can retrigger and what changes during the feature are all worth looking at.
Multipliers
A multiplier changes the value of a win or another part of the game. The interesting question is what it multiplies, and when.
Sticky Wilds
These Wild symbols stay in place for more than one result. How long they stick around depends on the feature.
Feature Buy
Feature Buy lets players pay to access a bonus feature directly instead of waiting for it to trigger. It’s not available in games offered by GB-licensed operators, and international versions may work differently.
Hold and Win
A feature built around respins and symbols that remain on the reels. Landing another qualifying symbol can restart the counter.
Ways to Win
No fixed paylines: matching symbols on adjacent reels count, usually from the left. In Megaways games the number of ways changes every spin.

Same Feature, Different Rules
A game description might say “Multiplier Wilds”. Useful, but only up to a point. It doesn’t tell you what happens when two of them land in the same win.
In The Dog House, Wilds worth x2 and x3 on the same winning line add up to x5. In Buffalo King’s Free Spins, the same two values are multiplied together to make x6. Same label, different maths.
Names cause trouble the other way too. Tumble, Avalanche and Cascading Reels can all describe the same thing, so I go by what the game does rather than what it’s called.
