Symbol Collection Slots: How Collection Mechanics Work

Collection is my favourite slot mechanic, and the idea is simple: the game keeps count of certain symbols and does something with that count later. In Big Bass Bonanza, every Fisherman Wild that lands in Free Spins is counted, and every fourth one adds ten spins and moves the bonus up a stage.

What gets counted, and how long the game remembers it, varies a lot. Some games forget the count when the bonus ends; others carry it into later rounds.

Quick answer Symbol Collection is when a slot keeps track of qualifying symbols or values and uses that progress later. It might unlock a feature, add Free Spins or move a bonus to another stage. A symbol appearing on the reels is not enough on its own: the game has to store the progress.

What are Symbol Collection slots?

A Symbol Collection feature remembers something that happened earlier. The game counts particular symbols or values as they land, holds on to that total, and changes something when it reaches a set point.

Big Bass Bonanza is the clearest example. During Free Spins, every Fisherman Wild that lands is counted. The 4th, 8th and 12th each add ten more Free Spins and move the feature up a stage, and each stage raises the separate multiplier on the cash the Fisherman collects, from x1 to x2, x3 and finally x10.

That’s different from landing three Scatters at once to trigger a bonus. Here the game has to keep the count and use it later.

How does Symbol Collection work?

The game decides what counts, keeps a running total, and does something when the total reaches a set point.

Pirots 5 has two systems that are easy to mix up. Its birds collecting same-colour gems is how the game pays (ELK’s CollectR mechanic). Separately, eligible collected symbols fill a Symbol Collection Meter. Filling that meter creates a pending feature-symbol release, and the meter’s state can carry into the Bonus Game.

The Sword and The Grail keeps a running count of Swords instead. The three, four or five Swords that trigger Free Spins become the starting count, and reaching six, eleven and eighteen in total moves the feature up a stage each time, with more Free Spins and a change to the Grail Multiplier Wild. So a five-Sword trigger is only one Sword from the next stage, while a three-Sword trigger needs three. Collection stops at eighteen.

Big Bass BonanzaDynamite Riches Megaways
What is collected? Fisherman Wilds that land during Free Spins; each counts towards the running total. Dynamite Wilds landing during base-game spins.
What does it change? The 4th, 8th and 12th collected Wilds each add 10 Free Spins and raise the Money-collection multiplier to x2, x3 and x10. There is no fourth step. Each group of 15 Dynamites unlocks the next feature; 60 collected Dynamites unlock all four.
How long is progress kept? The count stays active through the Free Spins round, then resets when that round ends. The unlock progress carries across base-game spins at the same stake until all four features are unlocked.

Symbol Collection builds up a count, meter or stored value from specified symbols. The accumulated progress might unlock a feature, add spins, move to a new stage or change a multiplier. What counts, and how long the collection lasts, depends on the game.

What can be collected?

Often it’s a straight count, like Big Bass Bonanza’s Fisherman Wilds or The Sword and The Grail’s Swords. But not every symbol has to be worth one.

Symbols can count for different amounts

In Moon Princess, princess-symbol wins fill a three-part Trinity meter: three of a kind fills one section, four fills two and five fills all three. It only moves on a win, but it’s the princess symbols in the win that count, which is what keeps it on this page rather than with the win-driven counters further down.

Rabbit Garden uses points in Free Spins. Each winning paying symbol is worth one point and each collected Coin three, with levels at 30, 45, 60 and 90 points.

Sometimes a value is collected

King Frog Feast adds bug multiplier values (x8, x5, x2 or x1) to the King Frog’s running multiplier as he eats them. In MONOPOLY Money Line, a Collector gathers the multipliers on visible symbols into its own multiplier, while those symbols keep theirs. Here it’s a value that’s stored rather than a count of symbols, which is where Symbol Collection starts to overlap with Increasing Multipliers.

Where is collection progress stored?

A progress bar makes collection easy to spot, but a game doesn’t need one. Fat Banker adds each collected Wild Money Bag to an on-screen meter, Thor’s Rage 2 uses a three-level Thunder bar where each Keeper Wild fills one of three steps per level, and Pirots 5 calls its display the Symbol Collection Meter. Other games just keep a count or a stage.

A meter on screen doesn’t prove it’s Symbol Collection, though. It depends on what fills it.

What can collection progress change?

Dynamite Riches Megaways uses it as an unlock system in the base game. Dynamite Wilds fill a Feature Unlock Progress bar, and every fifteen unlocks the next feature in turn: TNT, Golden Wilds, Multiplier and finally Mega Wild. The count can carry across ordinary spins as long as the stake stays the same, which I’ve noticed when playing it myself.

In Viva Fiesta, collecting coloured Skull Coins can unlock one, two or all three minigames. Which colour goes with which minigame, and how many coins are needed in full, aren’t stated in my sources.

Elsewhere on this page, collection adds Free Spins and moves a bonus up a stage (Big Bass Bonanza, The Sword and The Grail), releases feature symbols (Pirots 5) or changes a multiplier.

How long can collection progress last?

Big Bass Bonanza’s Wild count resets when Free Spins end. The Sword and The Grail stops counting at eighteen Swords. Pirots 5 can take its meter into the Bonus Game, and Dynamite Riches Megaways keeps its count across base-game spins at the same stake until all four features are unlocked.

A count that lasts across ordinary spins behaves very differently from one that only exists inside a bonus.

Symbol Collection examples compared

Symbol collection behaviour in games I’ve checked
Game What is collected How it’s kept What the collection changes
Pirots 5
Eligible symbols collected during CollectR play. Symbol Collection Meter; state can persist into the Bonus Game. A full meter creates a pending feature-symbol release.
Big Bass Bonanza
Fisherman Wilds during Free Spins. Cumulative Wild count through the feature. Every fourth Wild adds 10 Free Spins; stages also advance the Money-collection multiplier to x2, x3 and x10.
Dynamite Riches Megaways
Dynamite Wild landings. Feature Unlock Progress at the same stake. 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 Dynamites unlock four successive features.
The Sword and The Grail
Cumulative Sword symbols, seeded by the triggering Swords. Sword count through Free Spins stages 1 to 3. Thresholds at 6 / 11 / 18 Swords advance stages, add spins and change Grail multiplier state.
Moon Princess
Qualifying princess-symbol winning combinations. Three-section Princess Trinity meter. In base play, a full meter awards one Princess Trinity free round. During Free Spins, filling the meter adds spins instead; Princess Trinity itself is inactive.
Fat Banker
Wild Money Bags during Fat Banker Free Spins. On-screen progress meter through the feature. Defined thresholds grow the Banker and add Free Spins; the first growth step needs five additional bags and awards three extra Free Spins.
Viva Fiesta
Coloured Skull Coins. Coin-collection state; the full threshold isn’t stated in my sources. Collecting the coloured coins can unlock one, two or all three minigames; the exact colour mapping is not stated in the evidence used here.

Symbol Collection vs Money Collection

Both involve collecting, but they do different jobs. Money Collection gathers prize values from eligible symbols when a collector lands. Symbol Collection stores progress towards a later change.

Big Bass Bonanza does both with the same symbol. When a Fisherman Wild lands, it collects the cash values on the Fish symbols; that’s Money Collection. The Fisherman is also counted towards the four-Wild stages; that’s Symbol Collection. Big Bass Splash‘s rules describe the same pairing. The Big Bass Bonanza guide goes through it in detail.

Symbol Collection vs Scatter and Bonus trigger counts

Landing enough Scatters or Bonus symbols in one result doesn’t necessarily mean the game stores a collection. Concrete Cowboys, for example, can trigger its Bonus game when three Bonus symbols are collected, but that rule alone doesn’t establish a count carried across results.

The test is whether qualifying symbols build progress that survives into a later result, rather than simply satisfying a trigger condition there and then.

Symbol Collection vs win-driven meters and counters

Games sometimes call something a Collector when it isn’t collecting symbols. In Arizona James and the Lost Relics, every regular win during Tomb of Gold adds a bullet to a Bullet Collector. Le Cowboy similarly adds a bullet for each win during Trail of Trickery. Those counters track wins of any kind, not particular symbols.

Death Becomes You tracks defeated Monsters instead. Five defeats award Duel with Death. Again, it’s the outcome that advances the counter, rather than a designated symbol being collected.

Symbol Collection vs Hold & Win

Hold & Win keeps symbols or positions in place while respins continue. That isn’t the same as counting symbols towards a later feature.

Monopoly Megapots shows how the two can overlap: during Hold and Spin, matching Megapots icons can accumulate towards a three-icon prize trigger. The held-position respin system and the icon-count rule are separate pieces of the feature.

Symbol Collection FAQ

Is landing three Scatters the same as Symbol Collection?

Not by itself. Three symbols can trigger a feature in one result without the game keeping any count. Symbol Collection needs a count that carries forward.

Can Symbol Collection and Money Collection happen together?

Yes. In Big Bass Bonanza Free Spins, the Fisherman Wild collects the cash on the Fish symbols and is also counted towards the next stage.
