Expanding Symbols in Slots: How Expanding Wilds and Full-Reel Symbols Work
Expanding Symbols start small and then grow across more of the existing reel or grid. A full-reel Wild is one familiar version, but the mechanic can also involve ordinary pay symbols, 2×2 growth or expansion in a particular direction.
Quick answerExpanding Symbols are symbols that increase the area they occupy after landing or being activated, taking over additional existing positions without inherently increasing the size of the reel or grid. In the games Slotathon has reviewed, many expand vertically to cover a reel, while others grow to 2×2 or along a set direction.
What are Expanding Symbols in slots?
An Expanding Symbol changes size after it lands or is activated. Instead of occupying only its original position, it grows into other positions that are already part of the reel or grid.
A familiar version is a symbol stretching vertically until it fills a reel, but that is not the definition. What defines the mechanic is the change in the symbol’s footprint.
Expansion leaves the grid itself unchanged. A game that adds positions or rows is using Expanding Reels, a different mechanic.
How do Expanding Symbols work?
The basic sequence has three steps: a symbol lands, the game’s rules decide whether it qualifies to expand, and if it does, it occupies additional positions. What counts as qualifying varies considerably.
In NetEnt’s Starburst, a Starburst Wild appearing on reel 2, 3 or 4 expands over the whole reel. In Play’n GO’s Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead, one ordinary symbol is selected before Free Spins, and instances of it can expand to cover their reels only when doing so awards additional prizes on the active paylines.
The result can look similar on screen, but the route there is different. Starburst expands an eligible Wild when it lands, while Book of Dead first selects a pay symbol and expands it only when doing so produces an additional prize.
The useful ruleExpanding describes a change in the symbol’s footprint, not one standard trigger or shape. Full-reel expansion is common in the games Slotathon has reviewed, but each game’s rules decide which symbols can grow, when they grow and how much space they occupy.

Are Expanding Symbols always Wilds?
No. Expanding Wilds are one branch of the mechanic, not the whole of it.
Starburst has the straightforward Expanding Wild: it substitutes for paying symbols and expands across its reel. Blueprint Gaming’s Eye of Horus also uses an Expanding Wild: a Horus Wild landing on reel 2, 3 or 4 expands into a stacked Wild.
Book-style games show why “Expanding Wild” cannot stand in for the whole category. In Book of Dead, the game selects an ordinary symbol as the Special Expanding Symbol for the Free Spins sequence. Pyramid King similarly selects a non-Bonus symbol before Free Spins, and that selected symbol can expand when enough instances are present for a win.
Wild substitution and expansion are separate ideas. A symbol can expand without being a Wild, and a Wild can exist without expanding.
Do Expanding Symbols always fill a whole reel?
No. Full-reel vertical expansion is common in the games Slotathon has reviewed, but the exceptions make the boundary clearer.
Habanero’s King Frog Feast uses a King Frog Wild that normally occupies one position. During Free Games, if it eats four or more bugs in a spin, it expands from 1×1 to 2×2 at its current position. It does not continue growing beyond 2×2, and it can return to 1×1 on the next spin if the condition is no longer met.
ELK Studios’ Katmandu Gold goes in another direction. A winning symbol marked with the Expanding Win arrow expands along the direction shown by that arrow, replacing eligible symbols in its path. The first-party material Slotathon reviewed lists some symbol classes as protected from that replacement.
King Frog Feast and Katmandu Gold show that “expanding” does not automatically mean “fill the reel”.
Where can Expanding Symbols appear?
They are not confined to bonus rounds. Starburst uses its Expanding Wild in the base game, while Eye of Horus uses its Expanding Wild in both the base game and Free Games. Katmandu Gold can apply its Expanding Win behaviour outside a bonus sequence.
In the games Slotathon has reviewed, Free Spins are a common setting, especially for selected-symbol variants. Book of Dead, Legacy of Dead, Pyramid King and Book of Hidden Tombs all designate a symbol for expansion within their Free Spins features.
Where the expansion happens is another game-specific rule, not part of the mechanic’s definition.
Book-style Expanding Symbols
One recognisable family of games chooses a regular pay symbol before or during Free Spins and gives that symbol special expansion behaviour. They share a format, but the detailed rules are not interchangeable.
In Book of Dead, one ordinary symbol is selected for the Free Spins sequence. After ordinary winning combinations are recognised, that Special Expanding Symbol can cover all three positions on its reel when the expansion produces additional prizes. Expanded instances do not have to sit on adjacent reels to form the resulting winning combination.
Legacy of Dead starts with a similar random selection, then adds to it on retriggers: each retrigger selects an additional Special Expanding Symbol. The set of symbol types capable of expanding can therefore grow during the same Free Spins feature.
Book of Hidden Tombs uses another variation. One non-Scatter symbol becomes the Golden Expanding symbol, but how many instances it needs before expanding depends on which symbol is selected. When that threshold is met, the symbol covers its reel and is evaluated across the game’s 10 lines.
Those evaluation rules belong to the individual games. They do not mean every Expanding Symbol pays across non-adjacent reels or bypasses the game’s normal win system.
Expanding Symbols with other mechanics
Expansion often sits alongside other mechanics.
Starburst shows the split. First the Wild expands across its reel. It is then held while the other reels respin. Expansion describes the change in occupied space; the later held state is Sticky Wild behaviour.
During Free Games in Eye of Horus, each expanding Horus Wild also activates the game’s symbol-upgrade feature. That upgrade is an additional rule, not part of what “expanding” means.
More elaborate combinations exist too. In Battle The Beast, opposing Bear Wild and Viking Scatter symbols on adjacent reels expand before a duel, after which the winner can replace the loser across the affected reels. Here expansion is one stage in a broader transformation sequence rather than the whole feature.
Expanding Symbols vs Giant Symbols
The difference is about how the larger footprint is created. An Expanding Symbol begins smaller and then grows into additional positions. A Giant or Colossal Symbol can arrive already occupying several positions.
A large symbol on screen is not enough to tell you which mechanic you are looking at. The key question is whether it arrived large or became large after landing or activation.
Expanding Symbols vs Expanding Reels
These names sound similar but describe changes to different things. With an Expanding Symbol, the symbol occupies more of the positions that already exist. With Expanding Reels, the game adds positions to the reel or grid itself.
Katmandu Gold is useful because the game contains both ideas without making them the same mechanic. Its Expanding Win symbols can grow through existing positions, while its Avalanche sequence can add rows to the playing area. One changes the symbol footprint; the other changes the grid.
What the Expanding Symbol label does not tell you
Knowing that a slot uses Expanding Symbols does not tell you which symbols can expand, what triggers the change, whether the final shape fills a reel, or whether expansion happens in the base game or a bonus feature. It also does not tell you whether the expanded symbol remains in place afterwards.
The label tells you nothing by itself about RTP, volatility, hit frequency, maximum win, feature frequency or the likelihood of winning. Those are separate characteristics and need their own evidence.
Expanding Symbols FAQ
What is an Expanding Symbol in slots?
An Expanding Symbol is a symbol that increases the area it occupies after landing or being activated, taking over additional existing positions without inherently making the reel or grid larger.
Are Expanding Symbols always Wilds?
No. Some are Expanding Wilds, but ordinary pay symbols can expand too. Book of Dead and Pyramid King are examples where a regular symbol is selected for expansion during Free Spins.
What is an Expanding Wild?
An Expanding Wild is a Wild symbol that grows to occupy additional positions. Starburst uses a full-reel Expanding Wild, while Eye of Horus expands its Horus Wild into a stacked Wild on reels 2, 3 or 4.
Do Expanding Symbols always fill a whole reel?
No. King Frog Feast can expand its King Frog Wild from 1×1 to 2×2, while Katmandu Gold uses directional expansion along a marked path. Full-reel expansion is common in the games Slotathon has reviewed, but not universal.
Can Expanding Symbols appear in the base game?
Yes. Starburst uses its Expanding Wild in the base game, Eye of Horus uses expansion in both base play and Free Games, while Book of Dead and the other Book-style games Slotathon has reviewed reserve expansion for Free Spins.
Are Expanding Symbols the same as Expanding Reels?
No. Expanding Symbols increase the area occupied by a symbol within the existing grid. Expanding Reels add positions to the playing area itself.
Are Expanding Symbols the same as Giant Symbols?
No. An Expanding Symbol starts smaller and grows after landing or activation. A Giant or Colossal Symbol can land already occupying several positions.

How we research slot mechanics
Slotathon starts with primary evidence such as game rules, in-game help, developer documentation and game sheets. Third-party reviews are used as secondary sources to compare against that evidence and help identify areas that may need further verification.
When sources disagree, we preserve the disagreement in the research instead of quietly choosing whichever version is easiest to publish.
