What Is a Payline in Slots? Fixed Paylines Explained
A payline is simply the route symbols need to follow to make a line win. Sometimes that’s a straight line across the reels. Other times it runs diagonally or zig-zags between rows.
Those routes are fixed by the game, but that doesn’t mean every line is always in play. Book of Dead lets you choose how many to use, while Starburst counts wins from either end of a line. Both have been huge in UK lobbies for years.
What is a payline in slots?
Picture a slot grid with a few paths drawn across it. Those paths are the paylines. When the reels stop, the game checks each active line, position by position, against the paytable.
The route doesn’t have to stay on one row. A line can climb, drop or zig-zag as it crosses the reels, so matching symbols can sit at different heights and still be on the same line. It works the other way too: symbols that happen to sit side by side don’t count unless they’re on the same line.
Not every slot uses lines. Ways to Win, Cluster Pays and Pay Anywhere each decide wins differently, and there’s a side-by-side comparison further down.

How does a payline win work?
The line shows the game where to check. The paytable decides which symbols count, how many are needed and where a winning sequence can begin.
Dead or Alive keeps it simple. It has nine fixed lines on a 5×3 grid, which NetEnt calls bet lines, and the game sheet says wins on its medium- and low-value symbols count from left to right. Battle The Beast does the same on a bigger set of 25 lines, counting from the leftmost reel.
What does “fixed paylines” actually mean?
It means the possible line shapes have already been defined by the game. You aren’t drawing a new route with every spin.
It doesn’t necessarily mean all the lines are switched on. Book of Dead lets you play anything from one to 10 lines, switched on in numerical order, and Legacy of Dead also allows between one and 10. The routes stay fixed; it’s the number in play that changes.
Do paylines always pay left to right?
Most of the games I’ve checked do, including Eye of Horus and Fishin’ Frenzy. Starburst doesn’t. Its 10 lines are fixed, but a win can count from the leftmost reel or the rightmost one.
So a fixed line tells you where the symbols have to land, not necessarily which direction the game checks them in. That’s a separate rule to look up in the paytable.
How many paylines can a slot have?
There’s no standard number. The games on this page run from nine lines in Dead or Alive to 50 in Big Bamboo.
Features sit on top of the lines rather than replacing them. Big Bass Bonanza pays left to right on 10 fixed lines from the leftmost reel, and the Fisherman does his work in Free Spins on top of that. Gonzo’s Quest uses 20 fixed lines, and its Avalanche only starts after a line win.

Can a fixed-payline slot also have Scatter wins?
Yes. Battleship Strike pays its ordinary wins left to right on 25 fixed lines, but its Scatter pays anywhere on the reels. Rhythm Nights is set up the same way.
The Scatter has its own rule, and everything else still pays on the lines. That’s not the same as a Pay Anywhere game, where every symbol pays that way. Not every Scatter pays cash either, so check what it does in the game you’re playing.
Is 243 Ways the same as 243 paylines?
No. I remember when 243 Ways games started appearing, and the number still sometimes gets described as 243 paylines. That isn’t what it means.
A 243 Ways game counts matching symbols on consecutive reels without any drawn routes at all. On a five-reel, three-row grid a symbol can sit in any of three spots on each reel, and 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 is 243. A genuine 243-payline game would need 243 separately drawn lines. Do matching symbols have to be on the same row?
No. A line can climb, drop or zig-zag between rows, and the symbols just have to sit on the positions it runs through.
Does having more paylines mean you’re more likely to win?
Not on its own. More active lines means more places a win can land, but the number of lines doesn’t tell you the RTP, how often a game pays or how volatile it is.
