Giant & Colossal Symbols in Slots: How Multi-Position Symbols Work
A Giant Symbol covers several positions on a slot grid at once. Instead of a separate symbol in every square, you see one big symbol filling a 2×2, 3×3 or even larger block.
They don’t all get there the same way. In Wolf Gold’s Free Spins, the middle three reels spin together as one giant symbol, while in Reactoonz, four matching symbols in a square join up to make one.
What are Giant Symbols in slots?
Think of a regular slot grid as a set of individual spaces. A Giant Symbol covers several of those spaces at the same time, without adding any new rows or reels.
The size is only part of the story. A large symbol might count towards a payline win, form part of a cluster or carry a special Wild rule. You have to look at the game’s own rules to know how it behaves.
How do Giant Symbols occupy the grid?
Some simply land that size. Nitropolis 5‘s 2×2 Super and 3×3 Mega symbols turn up on spins or symbol drops, and Katmandu Gold‘s Big Symbols can appear as 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4.
Wolf Gold does it differently. Under its current rules, reels 2, 3 and 4 spin together during Free Spins as one 3×3 symbol, while the grid itself stays 5×3. Older Pragmatic Play wording describes it differently, which I’ve noted in the sources.
Reactoonz builds its giants from the grid: four matching normal symbols sitting in a square join up to form a Giantoonz. And in Nip Tuck, Boost Job takes a Face symbol or a Receipt Wild and grows it to 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4.

Giant and Colossal symbols cover several positions already on the grid. Some arrive oversized, others form from matching symbols, and some grow during a bonus. A giant symbol describes the resulting multi-position state; expansion describes a change in size. Each game sets its own footprint and evaluation rules.

What sizes can Giant Symbols be?
There’s no standard size. Katmandu Gold and Nip Tuck both go up to 4×4, Nitropolis 5 stops at 3×3, and Wolf Gold’s is 3×3.
Fat Banker goes further. Its Banker grows through collection during Free Spins and can eventually fill the board. Exactly how much it grows at each stage isn’t something I’ve been able to confirm from Push Gaming’s own material, so I’ve left those steps out.

How are Giant Symbols evaluated?
You can’t work out the payout just by counting the squares a symbol covers. Wolf Gold uses its giant symbol in a payline game, while Reactoonz pays for connected clusters.
Katmandu Gold fills the positions under a Big Symbol with the same symbol, so it can count across all of them. Reactoonz does something else entirely: a Giantoonz doubles any winning cluster it’s part of. Same size on screen, two different ways of paying.
Are Giant Symbols the same as stacked symbols?
No. A stack is normally several separate symbols appearing next to one another. A Giant Symbol is one larger or linked symbol occupying several spaces.
They can look almost identical on the screen. The difference is in how the game counts them.
Giant Symbols vs Expanding Symbols
Expanding Symbols describe a change: a symbol starts smaller and grows. Giant Symbols describe the larger multi-position state, however it was formed.
Nip Tuck shows how the two can overlap. Boost Job enlarges an eligible symbol, so expansion is how it becomes giant. But a symbol that arrives already 3×3 can be giant without expanding during that spin.
Giant Symbols vs Expanding Reels
Expanding Reels change the playing area by opening additional positions. A Giant Symbol takes over more of the spaces already there.
Katmandu Gold has both: Big Symbols take up space that’s already there, while its Avalanche can add rows to the grid.
Do Giant, Colossal, Big, Mega and Huge mean the same thing?
Not reliably. Wolf Gold calls its feature a GIANT Symbol, Katmandu Gold uses Big Symbols, and Nitropolis 5 calls its 2×2 and 3×3 forms Super and Mega symbols.
Myth of Ra features Huge Symbols during Free Spins, while Depths of Fortune has a Colossal Wild among its Loaded Reel rewards. The names suggest something large, but they don’t tell you its size, trigger or payout rule. Those details have to come from the individual game.
Giant Wilds and other interactions
A Giant Symbol doesn’t have to be Wild. In Reactoonz, Giantoonz form from ordinary matching symbols, while the 3×3 Gargantoon is a Wild that’s added at a random position and substitutes for normal symbols.
Other games add their own conditions. Fat Banker keeps its Banker on screen during Free Spins as it collects Wild Money Bags and grows. In Myth of Ra, a Huge coin has a particular role in triggering Ra’s Gold, its Hold & Win round.
Giant Symbols FAQ
Are Giant and Colossal symbols the same thing?
Often similar, but the names aren’t standard. Depths of Fortune’s Colossal Wild and Wolf Gold’s GIANT Symbol are each defined by their own game’s rules, not by the word.
Do bigger symbols mean bigger or more frequent wins?
The size on screen doesn’t tell you that. How a giant symbol pays, and the game’s RTP and volatility, are set by its rules, not by how much of the grid it covers.
