Starburst Slot: RTP, Wild Respins and How It Works

Starburst looks simple, but its RTP can vary substantially between versions. Slotathon found five different RTP settings across 11 UK-facing casino clients. The game itself is a 5×3 NetEnt slot with 10 fixed paylines that can pay from either direction, plus an expanding Wild that can stay in place for respins.

How Starburst works

Starburst uses a 5×3 reel layout with 10 fixed paylines. Winning combinations still have to follow one of those published line paths, so this is a conventional line-based game rather than a Ways or Pay Anywhere slot.

The unusual part is the direction of evaluation. Starburst can pay qualifying line wins from left to right or from right to left. Current in-game rules confirm the 10-line, pay-both-ways setup. NetEnt’s 2014 OpenBet game sheet adds that if both directions produce a win on the same active line, only the higher line win is paid.

That sounds like a small rule, but it changes how the reel layout is read. A combination does not have to begin on reel 1 to qualify, as long as it follows one of the game’s fixed line paths from the opposite edge.

How Starburst Wilds work

Starburst Wild symbol

The Starburst Wild appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4. When it lands, it expands vertically to cover the full reel and substitutes for paying symbols.

That full-reel expansion is the visual centre of the game. A Wild that lands in a single position does not simply stay as one symbol. It stretches over all three positions on that reel.

The Wild also has a second behaviour. Once expanded, it remains held while the other reels spin again. That is why Starburst is a useful example of the difference between an expanding symbol and a sticky Wild: the same symbol does both jobs, but the behaviours are distinct.

How Starburst respins work

An expanded Starburst Wild triggers a respin with that Wild held in place. If another Starburst Wild appears during the sequence, the new Wild expands too, stays held and awards another respin.

Current in-game rules cap the sequence at a maximum of three respins. NetEnt’s historical OpenBet game sheet also states that the respins use the same bet as the triggering round.

The sequence is simple once you split it into stages: the Wild lands, it expands, it stays put, and the other reels get another spin. A new Wild can extend the sequence. Expansion, stickiness and the respin are connected, but they are not the same mechanic.

Starburst RTP explained

NetEnt’s public game page lists Starburst at 96.08% RTP. RTP is the game’s theoretical long-run return percentage, not a prediction for an individual session.

That 96.08% figure should not be assumed to apply to every casino client. When Slotathon checked Starburst across selected UK-facing casino sites in September 2026, the in-game rules showed several different RTP settings.

There is also a small historical difference in NetEnt’s own material. The 2014 OpenBet game sheet lists 96.1%, while the current public page lists 96.08%. We keep those as separate dated figures rather than treating one as a typo or silently rounding them together.

What RTP did Slotathon find at UK casinos?

Slotathon checked Starburst across 11 selected UK-facing casino sites on 24-25 September 2026. We found five different RTP settings: 94.05% at five sites, 92.05% at two, 96.09% at two, 93.05% at one and 98.05% at one.

Starburst RTP observed by Slotathon, 24-25 September 2026
Casino RTP observed Checked
bet365 96.09% 24 Sep 2026
Betfred 94.05% 24 Sep 2026
Betway 94.05% 25 Sep 2026
LeoVegas 94.05% 24 Sep 2026
MrQ 94.05% 24 Sep 2026
Paddy Power 96.09% 25 Sep 2026
PlayOJO 92.05% 24 Sep 2026
Sky Vegas 94.05% 24 Sep 2026
Slots Temple 98.05% 25 Sep 2026
Virgin Games 93.05% 25 Sep 2026
William Hill 92.05% 24 Sep 2026

The most common setting in this sample was 94.05%. The 98.05% Slots Temple reading stood out because it was above both NetEnt’s current public figure and the other casino-client readings. We rechecked the same Starburst client on 4 October 2026 and it still displayed 98.05%.

About this snapshot: these are dated observations from the game clients Slotathon checked, not a market-share estimate or a recommendation of any casino. RTP settings can change, so an older observation should not be treated as the current figure without checking the game itself.

How can you check the RTP of the version you are playing?

Open How To Play and select Return to Player. In all 11 Starburst clients checked for this snapshot, the theoretical RTP was displayed directly on that screen.

That in-game figure is more useful than assuming the developer’s headline percentage applies everywhere, especially when the same title is available in several configurations.

Starburst volatility, hit frequency and maximum payout

NetEnt’s current public page labels Starburst Medium volatility and lists a maximum payout of 800×.

The same page gives a 23.00% hit frequency. In simple terms, that is the proportion of spins expected to produce a win of some size over the underlying game model. It does not say how large those wins are, and it should not be read as a profitability figure.

Some older secondary pages describe Starburst as Low or Low-Medium volatility, or quote a 500× maximum. Those descriptions do not match the current NetEnt page. For the headline figures, Slotathon therefore uses the current first-party values and keeps the older descriptions as reconciliation history rather than blending them together.

Does Starburst have Free Spins or a Bonus Buy?

Starburst’s main feature is the expanding-Wild respin sequence rather than a separate Free Spins round. The first-party rules and game material reviewed by Slotathon do not document a paid Feature Buy or Bonus Buy.

That makes Starburst structurally much simpler than many modern slots. There is no separate bonus mode to learn before the central mechanic makes sense: the feature grows directly out of what happens when a Starburst Wild lands on reels 2, 3 or 4.

Which Starburst version does this page cover?

This page covers the original NetEnt Starburst released in 2012. Current NetEnt material supplies the headline RTP, volatility, hit-frequency and maximum-payout figures.

Where historical NetEnt material or dated casino-client observations differ, those figures are identified separately rather than treated as universal settings for every Starburst client.

How we researched Starburst

Slotathon starts with primary evidence such as in-game rules, developer documentation and game sheets. We also compare dated live-client observations where configuration can vary.

When sources disagree, we keep the difference visible rather than turning several source states into one supposedly universal figure.
